Yes the defaults are sometimes a little odd. In my limited use of the software I haven't had a runaway malloc issue. Phase One don't seem very technically adept - you only have to look at their minimum requirements and then try to install it unsuccessfully on some newer windows hardware to find out (e.g Bay Trail is somewhat newer than "core 2 duo" yet it won't work which according to Phase One is because the processors don't support 64 bit, even though they run 64 bit versions of windows and Intel clearly state they are 64 bit and support 圆4 etc - I'm inclined to believe Intel more than Phase One). Maybe you can auto-apply a different preset in the Sony Free version but I haven't found how, not in the help pages nor anyplace else. You can, it's just that no style/preset, which is the default, has 180 in sharpening. C1 Pro 8 was unbearably unreliable on windows 10 and crashed all the time, and I saw some reports from people using Pro 9 who seemed to have the same problems (eating up system resources and leaking memory until either C1 or the entire machine crashed). Never understood why it appears to have no concept of input and output sharpening, so its never clear which type the sharpening controls are supposed to be for.ĭoes C1 still leak memory on Windows (or are you using it on Mac). Re: Lightroom: Don't want a proprietary DAM.Īs for performance: I didn't notice much of an increase in going from a mechanical drive to an ssd (raw storage) but it is literally twice as fast at showing previews with an i5 6400 than an FX6300.Ĭ1 free for Sony doesn't allow you to change sharpening? Wow. Colors, since I haven't learnt C1s color handling, are most often better with DXO.

Gradients in the sky and aliasing are consistently noticably less in C1 jpegs than DXOs jpegs, no matter what resampling method is used in the latter. C1 free for Sony defaults to (and I've been unable to change it) too much sharpening ("180") which makes almost every image look comical at 100%. In terms of preset IQ: Non-straight lines often appear aliased, i.e jagged, elsewise I have no complaints.
